Course Description

This workshop focuses on Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and Case-Based Learning (CBL) as effective teaching methods that promote active and sustained learning. Participants will explore the benefits and challenges of PBL and CBL and begin to develop their own problem statements or case studies tailored to their discipline and teaching objectives. You will learn strategies for supporting your students and assessing their work on the cases or problems.

Through a combination of theoretical input, interactive discussion and practical exercises, participants will gain an understanding of how to structure and implement these learning approaches effectively. The workshop emphasizes practical experience, allowing participants to design or refine their own PBL or CBL scenarios to ensure that they are well suited to their specific teaching environments. Participants will also have the opportunity, to share insights and best practices with peers.

Learning Objectives

Participants will:

  • understand how problem-based and case-based learning contribute to active and sustainable learning and apply this understanding in their teaching.
  • integrate PBL and CBL into their teaching practice and use them in a differentiated and targeted way based on the advantages and challenges of these methods.
  • develop concrete problem statements or case studies that align with their discipline and learning objectives.
  • use strategies to support students in their learning and to assess their performance.

Course Content

  • Fundamental principles of PBL and CBL<w:sdtpr></w:sdtpr>
  • Use and integration of PBL and CBL in teaching
  • Development of appropriate problems and case studies
  • Formative assessment and constructive feedback
  • Summative assessment based on a multi-dimensional grading

Methodology

This is an interactive workshop where participants will actively develop their own case study or problem scenario.

  • Interactive discussions and group work
  • Think-Pair-Share activities
  • Peer feedback and collaborative refinement
  • Theory input

      Preparation Assignment

Participants will bring a typical case study or problem from their own field of expertise. They will consider beforehand why this case or problem is a useful learning approach and what challenges they face in implementing it. Participants should bring notes and insights, as these will form the basis of discussions and practical exercises during the workshop.

If you are a lecturer and have not used case studies or problems in your courses, you can also approach the questions from a student's perspective. How have you studied with these materials in the past? What were the challenges in solving the cases? How did you find the support provided by the lecturer?

      Additional Information

The workshop will be conducted using Zoom. It will be highly interactive, requiring active participation and engagement. Digital tools such as Miro and breakout rooms will be used for collaboration and discussion.
