Course Description

This introductory course explores basic concepts of responsibility and sustainability (R&S) and discusses pedagogical considerations for incorporating these topics into any university course. By presenting concrete examples, this course wants to encourage faculty to rethink their own teaching. Discuss with peers and experts how to integrate R&S in teaching in their own discipline/field and be part of the change.

Learning Objectives

  • Participants learn about the importance of R&S as a driver for teaching innovation in Higher Education and in the HSG (Universität St. Gallen) Context
  • Participants gain orientation in implementing R&S into a course by...
    • learning about basic concepts of R&D
    • learning about possibilities on how to embed sustainability into teaching
    • learning about different pedagogical methods for training specific competences
  • Getting food for thought to rethink and innovate their current or future course and find the support they need to integrate R&S into it.

  • The urgency to integrate R&S into business school teaching today
  • Key R&S frameworks (cross disciplines)
  • The way HSG integrates sustainability into its curriculum (all disciplines)
  • Pedagogical patterns for fostering responsibility and sustainability in any course (learning outcomes, teaching & learning designs, assessment)
  • Kick start of the process: Application to the participants cases

Methodology

  • Prof. Dr. Judith Walls and Prof. Dr. Bernadette Dilger give short presentations about fundamental concepts from their respective fields of research (sustainability & responsibility and curriculum design).
  • Engage with peers and experts
  • Discuss concrete examples & participants current challenges in designing a constructive and innovative learning environment integrating R&S

Target Groups

Primarily addressed are active teaching faculty but also to everyone who is interested in fostering responsibility & sustainability in teaching (e.g., Programme manager, PhD Students).

Prof. Dr. Bernadette Dilger

Prof. Dr. Bernadette Dilger

is Professor of Business Education and Director of the Institute for Business Education at the University of St.Gallen. She studied business administration and business education. She trains prospective teachers in management, economics, and law. As the academic head of HDZ-HSG (Centre of Learning and Teaching in Higher Education at the University St.Gallen), she is responsible for the didactic offers at the HSG and advises and supports teaching faculty.

Prof. Dr. Judith Walls

Prof. Dr. Judith Walls

is Chair for Sustainability Management and Director of the Institute for Economy and the Environment (IWÖ). She also serves as the Delegate for Responsibility and Sustainability for the HSG. She completed her PhD at the Lally School of Management (Rensselaer) and was an Alcoa Foundation Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the Erb Institute for Sustainable Enterprise (University of Michigan). She also has an MBA in International Business with the NUS Business School (National University of Singapore) and an MSc in Wildlife, Biodiversity and Ecosystem Health at the Edinburgh Medical School (University of Edinburgh). She has many years of experience working in investor relations consulting in Europe and Asia, and conservation work in Africa and Asia.
